Here’s a collection of photographs I’ve taken during years of travelling around Turkey looking at classical sites, mainly Greco-Roman. I hope they may awaken or grow your interest in visiting these beautiful places, especially the smaller or more distant ones, peaceful but evocative reminders of earlier civilisations.
The first sites below are those in the north west of Turkey, the later ones more to the south west, then to the east. While the Aegean areas became firmly allied to Rome or under its control, and seem to have been very wealthy by their peak in the 2nd Century AD, the eastern parts of Turkey were more a mosaic of kingdoms, border lands subject to attacks from the East, and the remains in those parts are more eclectic. In the east, castles predominate rather than temples.
