There are numerous Syriac Orthodox monasteries and churches in the south east of Turkey. Here are photos of three of them:
Mor Gabriel (Deyrulumur) monastery, near Midyat. Founded in 397 AD, this is the oldest surviving Syriac orthodox monastery in the world. I found it a wonderful place, still with a real spiritual life.
Mor Hananyo (Deyrulzafaran) monastery near Mardin was founded in 493 AD and was the official seat of the patriarch of the Syriac Orthodox church from 1160 until 1932. I confess that I did not feel any sense of spirituality there or even a sense of welcome.
Monastery of the Virgin Mary (Meryem Ana manastırı) at Anıtlı near Midyat. I was told the monastery dates from 50 AD but had the impression that was apocryphal; anyway it was temporarily closed due to COVİD when I went there.
