Syriac Orthodox monasteries

There are numerous Syriac Orthodox monasteries and churches in the south east of Turkey. Here are photos of three of them:

  • Mor Gabriel (Deyrulumur) monastery, near Midyat. Founded in 397 AD, this is the oldest surviving Syriac orthodox monastery in the world. I found it a wonderful place, still with a real spiritual life.

  • Mor Hananyo (Deyrulzafaran) monastery near Mardin was founded in 493 AD and was the official seat of the patriarch of the Syriac Orthodox church from 1160 until 1932. I confess that I did not feel any sense of spirituality there or even a sense of welcome.

  • Monastery of the Virgin Mary (Meryem Ana manastırı) at Anıtlı near Midyat. I was told the monastery dates from 50 AD but had the impression that was apocryphal; anyway it was temporarily closed due to COVİD when I went there.
