Bodrum
Bodrum is ancient Halicarnassus and is where Mausolus (the local dictator, semi-independent from Persia) built his mausoleum in the fourth century BC. Or rather, his wife - who by the way was also his sister - built it after his death. Well, it may have been one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World but it fell down in an earthquake and then the Knights of St John, evidently with zero concern for history, used up all the stones to build the present castle in the early fifteenth century.
Bodrum has a small amphitheatre up on a hill outside the town, but it’s hardly worth the visit. The region surrounding Bodrum, however, is beautiful.
